The West huffs and puffs but to no avail
The European Union and the Untied States reaction to the Iranian resumption of uranium enrichment was predictably bellicose, chauvinistic and illogical; beneath the colonial arrogance and pomposity lies a sobering reality that the Western imperialists are struggling to come to terms with: the United States, whilst military a super power, is politically and economically moribund, the speed of the United States demise has undoubtedly been hastened by it adventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. The European Union is weaker still, the EU-3 were quite reasonable dismissed by president Ahmadinejad administration as a futile and contemptible distraction, unable to negotiate upon the nuclear issue, without deference to the caprices of their US superiors.
When one strip away the rhetoric the international community are squarely behind Iran, not the US Empire (the nations of arrogance), this was evident as the last meeting of the IAEA, where despite intense pressure, bribes and threats, the United States was unable to secure a referral to the UN security council, something that it now claims it is able to do, although this does seem somewhat at contrast to the reaction of NAM States; traditional US allies such as India and even South Korea have voiced their support for Iran right to peaceful Nuclear energy.
Irna reports:
"South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon said in Seoul on Wednesday that Iran is entitled to peaceful use of nuclear technology. Ban further told the visiting Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and the Pacific Mehdi Safari that Iran should be able to benefit from peaceful nuclear technology within the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) terms and regulations. While referring to Tehran's confidence-building measures, he said Iran has a legitimate right to peaceful use of nuclear technology within the framework of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the IAEA charter.
He hoped for settlement of Iran's nuclear issue through diplomatic means, talks with the three European States and cooperation with the IAEA. Ban also said he would visit Iran in an appropriate time. Safari for his part outlined Iran's confidence-building measures for peaceful use of nuclear energy, calling for Seoul's support for Tehran's rightful nuclear stances. The official said Iran's resumption of nuclear research activities in the presence of IAEA inspectors as of Tuesday was only for research and scientific purposes."
In fact, even in Europe there is dissent, Irna has reported:
"The Greens in the European Parliament called Wednesday on the European Union to stop threatening Iran with the UN Security Council and to put an end to verbal escalation of the situation. 'With regard to the forthcoming meeting with the EU High Representative Javier Solana we call on the three EU-Foreign Ministers to put an end to the verbal escalation of the situation,'' Angelika Beer, German Green MEP and President of the EP's Iran Delegation (committee) said in a statement this afternoon. 'The threats to declare the negotiations as failed and to call on the UN Security Council are inappropriate because up until now there is no proof that Iran has violated the Non-Proliferation Treaty,'' stressed Beer. 'Above all, these threats foil the EU strategy of Non- Proliferation. It is a risk to call on the UN-Security Council because Iran may expel the IAEO inspectors and thus the international community would loose any control it has over Iran's activities in this field.' 'We call on the EU-3 and Mr Solana to submit a new offer which is acceptable for both sides instead of paving the way to a military build-up on both sides,'' noted the statement. "
Indeed whereas the Western media and political leaders have presented the view that the P5 (the permanent member of the security council, Russia, China, United States, France and Britain) have reached unanimity on a referral to the UN Security Council and sanctions, this is simply untrue. The US State department reported on Sunday that a joint P5 statement would be issued to Iran demanding that it did no resume Iranian enrichment; in fact, China categorically refused and each P5 member urged Iran not to resume the process independently, and in their own terms. The significance of joint statement is that the statement are issued by the P5 as an international entity, independent statements are meaningless. The US administration has been desperately trying to play down the significance of this, having previously claimed to have the support of all the P5 members for a joint statement.
This does bode well for a unanimous UN Security Council resolution, particularly as the Russian and Chinese reaction to the resumption of the enrichment process were circumspect and measured. The Russian foreign minister expressed his disappointment and said he was concerned and urged a resumption of negotiations. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan was even more measured, suggesting Iran's nuclear issue should be resolved within the framework of the UN nuclear watchdog.
Despite claims by the Europeans and the United States that an emergency meeting of the IAEA
board of governors had been called, no such request has been received by the IAEA to date. Irna reports:
Hoverer, whilst many Western media publications including Reuters are presenting a shift in the Russian and Chinese position, both have indicated that they would be prepared to use their veto previously, there has been no suggestion from either of these two countries that they would be prepared to apply economic sanctions against Iran. Therefore we ought to maintain healthy skepticism at the claims of US and European regimes, which have been manifestly false throughout."No request has yet been made for an emergency meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Iran, said IAEA spokeswoman here Wednesday. Certain news agencies quote diplomats as saying that the European Union tries to have IAEA Board of Governors hold an emergency meeting on Iran.
The IAEA spokeswoman Melissa Fleming told IRNA here late Wednesday that they will continue their supervision work in Iran. She said the IAEA inspectors are still supervising Natanz, while continuing research on the record of Iran's nuclear programs. "
Furthermore, there is another inherent contradiction in the Western rhetoric, many Western countries maintain economic sanctions against Iran at present. Iran has learned to its detriment that negotiations with the West are futile, as the European Union and the United states are affected with terminally xenophobic myopia. Should economic sanctions be applied against Iran, they will be of no consequence to Iran, which is actively pursuing greater national self-subsistence; yet neither the Indian subcontinent nor Europe can survive without Iranian oil. Iran is already urging OPEC to reduce the pumping of oil; Iran potential to respond with Quid Pro Quo sanctions negates the possibility of realistic economic sanctions.
Moreover, should Iran be referred to the UN Security Council, Iran will immediately cease to apply the additional protocols to NPT. It is likely that a UN security council resolution will order to compliance with the NPT and IAEA, which of course Iran is already in compliance with. Iran is likely to withdraw from the NPT altogether, in such an event, which would therefore immediately nullify the legal basis for any UN resolution on the nuclear issue. The decision to withdraw from the NPT is reported to have already been taken by the Iranian government, in the event of a UN resolution, it is possible that Iran could take this step, on a referral to the Security Council to ward off any UN resolution.
